fly in the face of tradition

Businesses are always looking for different ways to help their staff develop team spirit and leadership skills.

From paintballing to helping to paint a local school, getting the team out of the office and into a completely different situation helps create the right kind of atmosphere for bonding.

Shared experiences bring people closer together and skills they may never thought they had can come to the surface.

One different' team-building experience would have to involve birds of prey.

Roger James, director of the Black Mountain Falconry at Abergavenny has teamed up with Katie Dobson, director of LiveLifeEvents from near Monmouth to offer her clients the opportunity to learn about falconry as part of their team building activities.

Roger James is one of the UK's renowned experts on birds of prey and has over the last five years established his falconry as a leading visitor centre in the area. Last year it welcomed more than 18,000 visitors.

Business owners who have effective working teams realise there is more to the lives of their employees than clocking in at 9am and out at 5pm.

Investing in time away from the office to find out about their team, what makes an individual tick and create outstanding job satisfaction provides a win-win situation. To get the best out of their people they need to show appreciation and encourage creativity and innovation from each individual.

Events created by companies such as Live Life Events understand this need. They listen to vision, values and objectives and build an event to help steer all employees towards these goals.

Some clients simply want to give their team a day out to remember. One solicitors' practice from London brought staff to the Monmouth area to try out falconry and duck herding for their unforgettable event.

The Black Mountains Falconry Centre is a forward-looking organisation which offers not only entertainment but education on all aspects of birds of prey.

Expertise obtained over 40 years of direct contact with these majestic birds has given the team the ability to provide falconry displays at any venue, and give talks and lectures on many related subjects.

Corporate entertainment is provided for on either a "fun" basis with perhaps family entertainment, or on a "scoring" system to fit in with team-building in conjunction with perhaps other activities such as archery or laser clay shooting.

So if you are looking for that different team-building experience for your staff, there is so much out there for you to choose from.

You could try a day at the races, or tickets to see a football or rugby game, an office picnic or a medieval banquet at somewhere like Caldicot Castle.

It's time to think outside of the box and give your staff something they may not be expecting
